He who believes in Me [who cleaves in and trust in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, from his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water (John 7:38 AMPC).

Imagine the thoughts it will provoke if you lived in a parched desert land, and someone declared that if you believed in Him, rivers of living water would flow out of your belly (innermost being). Incredulous! Right? You pine at once for such a reality, but the entire parchedness of your environment and experience makes you wonder.

It is such a declaration that Jesus makes to a crowd at the feast in Jerusalem. It is much the same declaration that he made to the woman (in John 4:14-15) who had gone to the well to fetch water; to which she longingly answered “Please sir, give me some of that water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again and won’t have to make this long trip out here every day.”

We live in such parchedness today. For far too many, life is an endless and seemingly hopeless search for that which truly satisfies. Like the woman who had been through five husbands, many, far too many have gone from one gold-plated tap to another sucking out a few drops of rust-tinted water.

If you seek satisfaction in anything other than Jesus, you will thirst again.

You will thirst again. If you seek satisfaction in anything other than Jesus, you will thirst again. Great jobs, nice homes, a to-die-for body, and all the money in the world will not quench your thirst. Nothing that this world has to offer can. They are all like mirages on the horizon, as you get closer; you realize there was nothing there at all.

Today, as another promise of satisfaction in the things of this world vanishes like a mirage; would you not turn to the eternal promise of Jesus?

“If anyone thirsts.”

“If anyone believes in me.”
