In the words of Job, “We’re all adrift in the same boat: too few days, too many troubles” – Job 14:1. Job, a man who suffered life’s adversities for a time before his full restoration had this to say about life. This may not be everybody’s experience. Whether it’s your experience or not, Christ has one answer and invitation for all – “Come to Me”. This invitation is to all who are tired, worn out, burnt out and weary with the heavy burden that sin, Satan and the world’s system impose.

Generally in life, people take leave or break from work to rest and rejuvenate. Some use the weekends and public holidays to go to recreational centers, and others take out time to sleep for hours in order to recuperate from long hours of work. As good as these are, they only provide temporary rest. There is real rest which only a total submission to Christ provides. This rest is in force even in the midst of labour. As much as the world provides allowance for the rest of the body, only Christ can give rest to the weary soul, and the battered spirit. This rest is only effective to those who acknowledge their need for it – the tired, the worn out soul, the burnt out life and the weary.
As long as we remain in this world of endless toils, there can never be lasting rest outside Christ. Your work leave (rest) – maternity leave, study leave, leave of absence, public holidays, work holidays, etc. will all end and get you back to work; but there is one kind of rest that doesn’t end with time – that is the rest that Christ gives. Are you weary with mere religion without the transforming life and power of Jesus? Are you worn out with trying to deploy your effort in handling the battles of life by yourself? Are you burdened with the load of sin and worldly cares? Jesus says, ‘Come to Me…I’ll show you how to take a real rest.’ In His rest is relief, ease, refreshment, recreation and blessed quietness – and all these are offered free of charge.

As we approach the throne of grace in prayer today, may you heed the counsel to “Cast the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully” – 1 Peter 5:7. Be double sure that as you “Pile your troubles on GOD’s shoulders—He’ll carry your load, He’ll help you out. He’ll never let good people topple into ruin” – Psalm 55:22. Do not hesitate as “the LORD still waits for you to come to Him so He can show you His love and compassion. For the LORD is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for Him to help them” – Isaiah 30:18. May you be blessed as you accept the real rest that Christ offers today in Jesus’ Name.
