In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. – Genesis 1:1-4

At creation, the Bible tells us that the earth was formless and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. This implies that darkness ruled the earth at that time – darkness was chief.  The ruler-ship of darkness is the beginning of void and formlessness.  The headship of darkness before creation also implies that there was no life on earth.  God could not continue the work of creation without addressing the barrier of darkness. God in His wisdom confronted the issue of darkness by introducing the one and only solution to its menace – LIGHT. The light did not just address darkness but all that came with it – void and formlessness.

What was this light at creation that silenced darkness and its attendant woes? Could this be the light of the sun? But we understand that the sun which is planet earth’s major source of light was not yet created at that point in time. What then could this light be? The light that chased away darkness at creation was the Son of God.  Jesus clearly affirmed:

“… I am the Light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life”

John 8:12.

Just as the sun is the light of planet earth, so Jesus is the Light of the world. The event in Genesis 1:1-4 was beyond physical; it was rather a deep spiritual contest between light and darkness which is still on today. It was a fight for dominance; it was a breaking of the dominion of darkness over the earthly realm, which could only be achieved by LIGHT! It foreshadowed the victory of Christ over Satan who is the chief ruler of darkness. Satan’s strength is made manifest in darkness just as evil is associated with darkness. The Apostle Paul revealed this truth when he wrote to the Church in Rome:

“The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore, let us cast of the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light”

Romans 13:12.

Are you experiencing any form of void in your life?  Call on the Light (Jesus). Are you battling with emptiness in your walk with God? Call on the Light! Do you see the activities of darkness prevailing around your life and family? Then beckon on the Light. Is darkness gaining ground in your work place, school or neighborhood? Then switch on the Light! Today, know for sure that you are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). You are not just a light bearer but an embodiment of light. The light you are has the capacity to outshine and undo any level of darkness. As you choose to shine, no darkness is powerful enough to withstand the light in you. The victory was won thousands of years ago at creation when God declared, “Let there be light”, and there was light. Darkness could neither resist nor question that order and even so it is today. As John rightly puts it,

“And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it]”

John 1:5 AMP.

Are you harassed by darkness today? Shine on because darkness has never overpowered light. You cannot afford to be overrun by it now; stand your ground and hold out your light, you heaven- bound soldier. It is natural that when light comes, darkness gives way because it is no match for the Light. The darkness pervading your life is still active because you are yet to realize and announce your identity as an embodiment of light.

Finally, you need to rise and shine because your light has come and the glory of the LORD is risen upon you (Isaiah 60:1). Until you deliberately begin to shine your light, darkness will keep holding sway, holding the souls of men hostage. Today, you are that light your world has long waited for; therefore, arise and shine, for your light has come!
