An Anchor for the Soul

God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

To stop a boat from drifting away with the tide, we drop its anchor. It is by a similar means that we stop ourselves from drifting away with the tides of this life.

There is much in the world that queries our hope of salvation. Daily, our assurance is assaulted by the trials of faith that the enemy sends our way. There is much it seems that raises the questions in that old hymn.

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
when the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

Whether it will hold or not depends apparently on the mettle of our anchor; for the one who has come to full persuasion about the faithfulness of God, it will. For such a one, his anchor is solid cast with the ore of the words “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.’ (1 Thess 5:24)

There is much in the world that queries our hope of salvation. Daily, our assurance is assaulted by the trials of faith that the enemy sends our way. There is much it seems that raises the questions in that old hymn.

God does go to great lengths to reassure us of His faithfulness. For someone like Abraham for instance, who in light of his very real realities might have struggled to hold on to God’s promises; God offered some amazing reassurances confirming it with an oath. As for him, it is for us written that:

God also bound himself with an oath, so that those he promised to help would be perfectly sure and never need to wonder whether he might change his plans. He has given us both his promise and his oath, two things we can completely count on, for it is impossible for God to tell a lie. Now all those who flee to him to save them can take new courage when they hear such assurances from God; now they can know without doubt that he will give them the salvation he has promised them. This certain hope of being saved is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls, connecting us with God himself behind the sacred curtains of heaven.” (Hebrews 6:17-19)

When we read words as this, nothing that hell can throw at us can dampen our confidence is singing the refrain:

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.

Prayer

Lord, let me know your faithfulness, so I can be filled with an unshakable assurance of salvation.
