Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should. (Ps 90:12)

Life is like the water in a sink full of laundry but without a stopper. The laundry is our life’s work; the tasks assigned to us to complete while we are here. The goal of life is to finish the laundry before the water runs out.

Life is like the water in a sink full of laundry but without a stopper. The laundry is our life’s work; the tasks assigned to us to complete while we are here. The goal of life is to finish the laundry before the water runs out.

Looked at this way, every man ought to live life with a certain sense of urgency. Jesus said, All of us must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent me, for there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end. (John 9:4). Indeed, there is little time left, and as it wears on, it is as though it runs faster. Do you not notice that when the water in the sink is almost run out, it runs faster?

Sadly, our lives are lived mostly without any urgency. We often stand at the sink barely paying any attention to the laundry. It is the nature of laundry that everything else but doing it seems attractive. We might even be more interested in how others are getting on with their own laundry than doing ours.

Now, it is important to note that the laundry gets harder to do; the less water is left in the sink. This is why the song writer said, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). Essentially, you won’t always have enough life left to live life fully. Moreover, we don’t have forever before the master returns, or the bell tolls – that gurgling sound you hear as the last stream of water enters the eternal drain – for our return.

As Paul the Apostle sat in prison, towards the end of his own life, he wrote to the Church in Colosse, and as he gave final greetings, his last exhortation was to be given to a brother named Archippus: “be sure to finish the task you were given in the Lord’s service.” I ask you to accept this exhortation, and live with a new urgency.
