“But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.” Act 1:8

…and you shall be My witnesses.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a witness is someone who gives evidence, something serving as proof or one who has personal knowledge of something. This is who we are called to be. In our text above, Christ said we shall receive power to be His witnesses when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. Being His witnesses means that we are to provide evidence or proof to our world that Christ is who He says He is, and that He is very much alive today.

In Acts chapter 3 when the people were surprised and amazed by the healing of the lame man at the Beautiful gate, Peter responded by asking them, “Fellow Israelites, why are you surprised at this?…. It was faith in Jesus that has made him well, as you can all see.” Peter and John were able to provide proof or evidence that Christ had been raised from the dead and that there is power in His name to give strength, heal the sick and raise the dead.

Again, in Acts 4:13 it was recorded that “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished, and they took note that these men had been with Jesus”. Indeed, you and I are to set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Indeed, you and I are to set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

This is the expectation of heaven concerning us. We are to show evidence to our world that Jesus is alive, and that He rules and reigns over the affairs of men. We are to dissolve doubts and reveal to our generation that Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE.

May God grant us grace to be Faithful witnesses for Christ in Jesus mighty Name. Amen.
